One exception to this rule is the hotel's general manager, who has been replaced by a succession of human "passersby" since they occasionally need to connect with the outside world, such as to pay bills or meet requests from spirits made to still-living family members or friends. This hotel is located in Seoul's Myeong-dong and is owned by Jang Man-wol (Lee Ji-eun). The hotel that serves the dead has been tied to her soul as a result of a significant sin committed more than a millennium ago. Instigated by the goddess Mago (Seo Yi-sook), Jang Man-wol visits Go Chan-sung's father (Oh Ji-ho) and strike a deal: in return for his life, his son will serve her 20 years later.
