Vic Mensa is an American rapper, songwriter, and former member of Kids These Days. He’s currently signed to Jay Z‘s Roc Nation label. His discography includes the album, The Autobiography (2017), and the EPs, There’s Alot Going On (2016), and The Manuscript (2017). Mensa, whose given name is Victor Kwesi Mensah, was born on June 6, 1993, in Chicago, Illinois. His father, Edward, is Ghanaian, and his mother, Betsy, European. They’re both educators. Mensa spent his childhood in the neighborhood of Hyde Park. He attended Whitney M. Young Magnet High School and took martial arts classes as a child. He also experimented with inline skating.
CAREER
Mensa began his music career in 2009 with the hip-hop group ‘Kids These Days’. They released two projects, Hard Times EP (2011) and Traphouse Rock (2012). The group disbanded in 2013 due to musical differences. Mensa co-founded the ‘SAVEMONEY’ rap collective in 2013. His debut solo mixtape, Innanetape, was independently released in September 2013. Mensa was featured on Kanye West‘s 2015 single “Wolves” alongside Sia. It topped the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart. The trio also performed the single on SNL’s 40th Anniversary Celebration on February 15, 2015. Mensa signed to Jay-Z’s Roc Nation Label in April 2015. The EP, There’s Alot Going On, followed in June 2016. It featured Ty Dolla Sign on the single “Liquor Locker”. A second tape, The Manuscript, arrived in June 2017. It featured guest appearances from Pusha T and Mr. Hudson. Mensa’s debut studio album, The Autobiography, was released in July 2017 by Roc Nation and Capitol Records. It peaked at #27 on the Billboard 200 and #14 on the Top Rap Albums chart. Filled with life experiences, the album sold roughly 16,000 copies during opening week. It was led by the single “Wings” featuring Pharrell Williams and Saul Williams. The production team included No I.D., Malik Yusef, and 1500 or Nothin.
