BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) -- — A soft target is a person or venue which has a lower level of security. Nightclubs, movie theaters, and public parks all fall into this category.
Aiming for soft targets is something criminals do.
Rather than take the risk of going for the big score, they hone in and take aim at the easy or "soft" target.
Former CIA Agent and Counter Terrorism Expert Mike Baker tells KBOI 2News these soft targets are the new primary targets for terrorists as well as everyday street criminals.
"This is not going to be resolved between now and the next unfortunate shooting, this is going to go on for a long time," said Baker.
With the recent attack at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando in mind, the owner of a similar club here in Boise, The Balcony, is trying to make his business less of a soft target.
But he admits there's only so much that can be done.
"We've taken some steps and we're working still on some things, but ultimately if somebody decides to walk in with a gun there's not much we can do other than respond," Emre Houser, the owner said.
With the attack in Orlando occurring in the middle of Pride Month there are many other events scheduled throughout the Treasure Valley and across the nation in the coming weeks which are also soft targets.
One LGBT Pastor believes her community has always been a target and the attack in Orlando does not enhance nor diminish that, adding they need to carry on with the events as scheduled.
"We should be able to march and have fun and just be who we are without this constant fear of 'am I gonna be the next one shot?'" Pastor Renee McCall said.
